BIO

Miriam Turner is a licensed professional counselor, having completed the necessary hours and passed the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam required by the state of Virginia.

Miriam received her MEd and degree in counseling from George Mason University in 2005 and has more than 15 years of experience working for both national and local nonprofit human service organizations, which include senior level management, fundraising, program development, and counseling. After graduating with honors from GMU, she started working both as a therapist and intake supervisor at The Women’s Center in Vienna, VA.

In 2008, she also opened her private practice in Falls Church, VA. As a therapist, Miriam, focuses on providing psychotherapy to children, adolescents, couples, families, and individual adults. She also enjoys providing career counseling services to many clients. In addition, she has led a weekly support group for the past three years for survivors of childhood sexual abuse. As an individual and group therapist, she addresses many issues, including trauma and abuse, grief and loss, and life transitions. In 2007, she also began working as leader for P.A.C.E. (Parent and Community Education) where she co-leads 8-week workshops for new mothers and their babies.

Over the years, Miriam Turner has volunteered her time for many community organizations, including crisis and domestic violence hotlines, Habitat for Humanity, family mentoring, Big Sisters, and tutoring.

Currently, she serves as a mentor to students as a member of Northern Virginia Licensed Professional Counselors (NVLPC) organization and an advisor for The Women’s Center’s ICAN (Information and Career Networking) program. She also serves on the NVLPC board of directors as Treasurer.

While attending GMU, working toward meeting Virginia’s 4,000-hour licensure requirement and completing her internship at The Women’s Center, Miriam worked to raise funds for organizations, such as the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of NYC (Consultant - 2007); Northern VA Family Services (Grant Manager, 2006-2007) , Pathways to Housing in New York, NY (Consultant – 2004-2005); Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (Director of Development - 2001-2004) and Catholic Charities USA (to Manager of Foundation and Corporate Support – 1999-2001).

Miriam moved from program development and management to fundraising while working as the Director of Housing Services at Catholic Charities USA. In this capacity, she wrote a successful grant proposal in which the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Catholic Charities USA $1,000,000 to be a national housing counseling intermediary for 24 local Catholic Charities housing programs. She managed the HUD grant for three years.

Miriam’s interest in low-income housing and homeownership started in 1993 when she started working at Habitat for Humanity International’s Washington, DC office. While employed at Habitat for Humanity, she was awarded a special one-year loaned executive position at HUD where she worked with HUD’s Assistant Secretary for Housing and 63 other national organizations to coordinate President’s Clinton’s National Homeownership strategy.

Miriam Turner lives in Northern VA, with her husband and her two children. She earned a BA in Philosophy from Scripps College in Claremont, CA in 1993.

Plan to join us after the meeting for networking.  Many of us carry our conversations to lunch at the nearby Brookings Institution.

Attire is business casual, recruiters are often present, so we ask all Monday Speaker attendees to contribute to the professional standards and objectives of this important networking meeting.

Doors open at 9:30 for networking and the program starts promptly at 10:00.
